EFNEP Success Stories

Susanne VanBlargan,
Luzerne County NEA

I held a SuperCupboard at St. Gabriel's Church in Hazleton where I instructed EFNEP nutrition lessons, American recipes, and how to fix balanced meals inexpensively to a Hispanic audience. During this particular lesson I learned how much these women really enjoyed cooking. After talking with them, I realized that they had a lot of culture that they were very willing to share with me.

They invited me to a parish party that featured folk dancing, delicious food and music of Latin America. I could not wait to share my experiences with my co-workers and supervisor. My supervisor asked if it would be possible to have our next NEA meeting at St. Gabriel's in Hazleton and if my clients would be willing to teach the NEAs how to prepare some ethnic dishes.

After receiving permission from Msgr. Delaney and the Hispanic clients, these women taught the Penn State nutrition advisors from Luzerne, Carbon, Lackawanna, and Wayne Counties some of their culture. Lunch was prepared for 18 people. Our delicious menu consisted of Dominican style beans and rice, Mexican Fajitas, chimichangas and empanadillas.

We all enjoyed the exchange of cultures. It was a highlighting experience of my job. I was fortunate to instruct as well as learn from these clients. We exchanged information as well as friendship. This is one opportunity that my co-workers and I will never forget.
